The underestimated park

The park most itinerariesrush through.

Most northern circuit safaris give Manyara half a day — a quick stop between Tarangire and Ngorongoro. That misses the point. Per square kilometre, Manyara holds more ecological diversity than any other park in Tanzania. The tree-climbing lions are only the most famous of its surprises. Given two full days, it outperforms parks five times its size.

Five ecosystems, stacked

From Forest to Hot Springs

Between the 600-metre escarpment wall and the soda lake, Manyara stacks five distinct ecosystems in a narrow band. Slide through each.

Groundwater Forest

~60 km²

A lush canopy of mahogany, fig, and sausage trees at the park entrance — fed by underground springs from the escarpment above. Blue monkeys, vervets, and baboon troops (the largest in Africa, up to 200 strong). The park's first impression.

Signature species
  • Blue monkeys
  • Baboons
  • Vervet monkeys
  • Bushbuck

Central park

Acacia Woodland

~80 km²

Classic East African savannah: flat-topped acacias, umbrella thorns, grassland. The tree-climbing lions of Manyara live here — draped across the horizontal branches through the heat of midday. Elephant herds of 50–200 move through daily.

Signature species
  • Tree-climbing lions
  • Elephant herds
  • Giraffe
  • Zebra

Central-south

Lake Shore

~220 km²

The alkaline soda lake — covers two-thirds of the park at high water, shrinks dramatically in the dry season. Pink with flamingos when conditions are right. Pelicans, storks, spoonbills and over 400 other bird species have been recorded here.

Signature species
  • Flamingos
  • Pelicans
  • Hippos
  • Waterbirds

Rift Escarpment

Backdrop

The 600-metre wall of the Rift Valley rises directly behind the park — the visual signature of every photograph taken here. Leopards shelter in the cliffside woodland. Views from the rim above are spectacular.

Signature species
  • Leopard
  • Klipspringer
  • Verreaux's eagle
  • Rock hyrax
05
Southern end

Hot Springs (Maji Moto)

Thermal zone

Bubbling sulphurous springs at around 60°C in the remote southern sector. Few tourists make it this far. Flamingos and unusual birdlife cluster around the thermal shallows — an unexpected end to the park.

Signature species
  • Flamingos
  • Rare waterbirds
  • Warthog
  • Secretary bird
04
The famous climbers

Africa's only tree-climbinglion population.

Across almost all of Africa, lions rest at ground level. In Manyara — and a handful of other places — they climb. Researchers still debate why: escape from tsetse flies, better ventilation, a vantage over prey, or simply tradition passed between generations of cubs. Whatever the reason, finding a pride draped across acacia branches at midday is a bucket-list safari moment.

Six Species to Track

The tree-climbing lions are famous, but Manyara holds much more. Here are the six animals most travellers come hoping to see — and where to find them.

Six ways to experience

More Than a Game Drive

Manyara permits activities most Tanzanian parks don't. Night drives, canopy walks, lake cruises, cultural tours — all inside 330 km².
Day game drives Standard 01

Day game drives

Classic morning and afternoon drives through all five ecosystems — half a day covers the full park north to south.

Night game drives Rare permission 02

Night game drives

One of the only Tanzanian parks permitting night drives. A completely different park after dark — genets, civets, bush babies, and nocturnal predators.

Canopy walkway Newest addition 03

Canopy walkway

A 370-metre treetop walkway through the groundwater forest — up to 18m above ground. Bird's-eye view of the canopy. Perfect for non-safari travellers in the group.

Cultural tours Mto wa Mbu 04

Cultural tours

The village at the park gate hosts more than 120 tribal groups — one of the most diverse villages in Africa. Bike tours, cooking lessons, or coffee walks.

Mountain biking Park perimeter 05

Mountain biking

Bike routes along the escarpment base and through Mto wa Mbu's farmland. A different speed — and a better way to spot the smaller wildlife.

Lake cruises Wet season only 06

Lake cruises

In high-water months (Dec–May) small boats operate on the lake itself — unusual perspectives on hippos, flamingos, and pelicans from water level.

How to plan it

Three Ways to Fit Manyara In

Almost every trip includes Manyara — but where it fits in the itinerary changes everything. Pick the shape that matches your pace.
01

Day trip from Arusha

1 day

Two-hour drive, full day in the park, return by evening. Works but hurried — you miss dawn and dusk. Best for travellers with only one free day.

Best for
Short schedules · Arusha base
02

En-route stop

Half day + overnight

Most common pattern. Half day in Manyara on the way to Ngorongoro, overnight at a Karatu or Manyara rim lodge, onward in the morning. Good balance.

Best for
Standard itineraries · Northern circuit
03

Two nights properly

2-3 days

The way Manyara rewards travellers. Two nights allows morning-and-evening drives, canopy walk, cultural visits, and one half-day spent slowly. Recommended.

Best for
Photographers · Birders · Slow travellers
Timing

When to Come

Jun – Oct
Dry season

Best game viewing. Elephant herds concentrated at water sources. Tree-climbing lions most active. Busy but worth it.

Nov – Dec
Short rains

Brief afternoon showers. Flamingos arrive in peak numbers. Green landscape, fewer vehicles. Underrated window.

Jan – Feb
Dry break

Short break in the rains. Warm, dry mornings, some light afternoon rain. Excellent birding with migratory species.

Mar – May
Long rains

Wettest period. Lush forest, dramatic skies, but some lake-shore roads flooded. Lake cruises at their best.

— Your Manyara day

Small Park. Long Memory.

Give Manyara the time most travellers don't. Two nights is enough to see why this park is loved quietly but fiercely by those who know it.
