Six trekkable peaks

Mountains of Tanzania

Kilimanjaro gets the attention, but these five other peaks offer distinct experiences — often in a fraction of the time, with none of the crowds.
01
The classic

Kilimanjaro

Africa's highest peak. Seven routes up, all covered in our dedicated Kilimanjaro pages. The only non-technical glacier walk in the world — summit day takes you from tropical rainforest to arctic ice in six days.

Best forFirst-time African trekkers, bucket-list climbers

Height5,895m
Days6-9
DifficultyModerate to hard
02
Best acclimatization

Mount Meru

Tanzania's second-highest peak. Often climbed as acclimatization before Kilimanjaro. Walk through Arusha National Park with wildlife (giraffe, buffalo) on day one. Dramatic crater-rim walk with views of Kilimanjaro on summit day. Significantly steeper than Kili on summit night.

Best forExperienced trekkers, Kili preparation, wildlife + climbing combo

Height4,566m
Days3-4
DifficultyModerate to hard
03
Active volcano

Ol Doinyo Lengai

'Mountain of God' to the Maasai. The world's only active natrocarbonatite volcano — its lava is black and comparatively cool. Climbed in an overnight push, starting at midnight, summiting at dawn. Steep loose ash. Not for first-time climbers but extraordinary for those ready.

Best forAdventurous climbers, geology enthusiasts, short-time-frame trekkers

Height2,962m
Days1-2
DifficultyHard
04
Cloud forest trekking

Usambara Mountains

Not summiting one peak but hiking between village guesthouses through cloud forest. Some of Tanzania's oldest forests with endemic species. Lushoto is the base town. Pace is relaxed — you walk 5-6 hours daily at low elevation.

Best forLess fit trekkers, cultural-nature combination, families

Height2,290m
Days2-5
DifficultyEasy to moderate
05
Rare & remote

Uluguru Mountains

Above Morogoro (southern Tanzania). Even less visited than Usambara. Dense forest home to endemic bird species and the luguru people's sacred sites. Trekking is on steep forest tracks. Limited infrastructure — real backcountry.

Best forReturn visitors, birders, solitude seekers

Height2,638m
Days2-4
DifficultyModerate
06
Hiking + primates

Udzungwa Mountains

A national park dedicated to walking. No vehicles allowed. Day hikes to waterfalls, longer treks to peaks. Home to endemic Sanje crested mangabey and red colobus. Part of the Eastern Arc mountains with millions of years of biodiversity.

Best forWildlife-focused walkers, primate enthusiasts, families

Height2,576m
Days2-6
DifficultyEasy to hard
Smart combinations

Mountain + Something Else

Most of our trekkers combine a climb with something else. Here are the patterns we build most often.
10-13 days

Meru + Kilimanjaro

Climb Meru first for acclimatization (4 days), rest 2 days in Arusha, then attempt Kilimanjaro. Dramatically increases Kili success rate.

10-14 days

Kilimanjaro + Beach

Standard post-climb recovery pattern. Fly from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar for 4-5 beach nights.

10-12 days

Usambara + Safari

Light trekking combined with Northern Circuit safari. For travelers who want variety without Kilimanjaro intensity.

14-21 days

Multi-mountain circuit

Kilimanjaro + Meru + Ol Doinyo Lengai for serious trekkers wanting altitude variety and cultural depth.
