Tanzania's Year at a Glance

The country has four distinct periods, not two. Here's what each looks like and what it's best for.
VerdictPeak Safari
01
Jun – Oct

Long Dry Season

The classic choice

Cool, clear, and dry. Wildlife concentrates at dwindling water sources. Landscapes brown, visibility high. July–October is when the Great Migration reaches the Mara. Kilimanjaro routes at their most reliable. Premium prices follow.

Best for
  • Classic northern circuit safaris
  • Kilimanjaro summit attempts
  • Mara River crossings (Jul–Oct)
  • First-time visitors
VerdictUnderrated
02
Nov – Dec

Short Rains

The sweet spot

Brief afternoon rains freshen the plains, migration herds begin returning south. Birding at peak with migratory species arriving. Prices lower, crowds thin. Our recommendation for travellers who've done a dry-season trip before.

Best for
  • Birding enthusiasts
  • Photographers (dramatic light)
  • Quieter camps
  • Green landscape

Jan – Feb

Short Dry Season

Calving season

A break between rains — warm, mostly dry. The wildebeest calving season in southern Serengeti peaks now, with the highest predator activity of the year. Zanzibar beaches at their best. Kilimanjaro climbable but warmer.

Best for
  • Wildebeest calving (Ndutu)
  • Zanzibar beach holidays
  • Warm-weather travellers
  • Honeymoons
VerdictShoulder Season
04
Mar – May

Long Rains

Green and wild

The heaviest rains. Some roads and remote camps close, but northern circuit parks stay accessible. Landscapes spectacular — lush, dramatic skies, migration herds in the central Serengeti. Lowest prices of the year.

Best for
  • Budget travellers
  • Low-crowd experiences
  • Dramatic photography
  • Green-season rates

Quick answers

Four Verdicts for Four Situations

01
Only one trip, what's safest?

August or September. The classic Serengeti migration crossing window — reliable weather, peak wildlife activity, guaranteed memories.

02
Want to avoid crowds?

November or March. Just before or after peak — same wildlife, half the vehicles, noticeably lower prices.

03
Budget-conscious traveller?

April or May. Wettest months have the lowest rates — but plan around closures and bring waterproof gear.

04
Combining safari and Zanzibar?

July to early October. Both northern circuit and Zanzibar at their best simultaneously.
