The two windows

Four Seasons for Climbers

Kilimanjaro's tropical-equatorial position gives it two dry windows separated by two rains. Here's how each affects climbing specifically.
Short Dry Season

January – February

Warm & clear

Warm, mostly clear, excellent visibility. Summit nights are the warmest of the year (-10 to -15°C instead of -20°C in July). Slightly higher humidity. Chinese New Year can bring a small crowd bump.

RecommendationExcellent
CrowdsModerate
TemperatureWarm
Long Rains

March – May

Avoid

Tanzania's heaviest rains. Trails become rivers, visibility drops, summit weather unpredictable. Many operators close climbing windows. Some climbers choose April-May for solitude — we advise against it.

RecommendationNot recommended
CrowdsVery low
TemperatureWarm, very wet
Long Dry Season

June – October

Peak season

The classic Kilimanjaro window. Dry, cold, predictable. June and early July are quieter. August and September are peak — book 6-9 months ahead. October is cooling off and quieter.

RecommendationOptimal
CrowdsHigh
TemperatureCold, dry
Short Rains

November

Transition

Short afternoon rains return. Southern-side routes (Machame, Lemosho) get wet trails. Rongai (north approach) stays dry — makes November a viable option on that route specifically. Genuinely quiet.

RecommendationRongai only
CrowdsLow
TemperatureWarm, brief rains

December

Holiday window

Rains tapering. Christmas and New Year brings a crowd spike with premium pricing. Mid-December (before 20th) offers decent weather and shoulder pricing. A good option if January-February doesn't fit.

Plan your summit night

Full Moons Ahead

Summit nights begin at 23:00-01:00 with headlamps on a blacked-out mountain. Under a full moon, you walk by moonlight — a genuinely unforgettable change.

January

Full moon: 4th

Waning through Jan 4. Excellent summit nights early month.

February

Full moon: 3rd

Early month gives bright summit lighting. Popular date.

March

Full moon: 4th

Full moon March 4. But rainy season — skip.

June

Full moon: 1st, 30th

Two full moons. Either summit window is ideal.

July

Full moon: 29th

End-of-month peak. Book by December for July 29 summit.

August

Full moon: 27th

Late August. The most-requested summit date of the year.

September

Full moon: 26th

Classic window. Still warm enough, still dry, great moon.

October

Full moon: 25th

Cooler but still excellent. Shoulder-season pricing.

What actually matters

Timing Factors

01

Weather predictability

Jun-Oct and Jan-Feb are the two windows when summit weather is most predictable. Rainy season climbs fail more often due to weather forcing turnbacks, not fitness.

02

Full moon night

Summit nights under a full moon give remarkable headlamp-free walking by 01:00. Plan your itinerary back from the full moon dates above if possible.

03

Crowd level

August and September are the busiest months — 50+ climbers at Barafu Camp some nights. June and late October give similar weather with a fraction of the people.

04

Cost

Peak season (Jul-Sep) commands 15-25% premium pricing. Shoulder (Jun, Oct, early Dec) saves money with minimal weather compromise.
