Northern Coast
Deepest water for year-round swimming (Zanzibar's other coasts lose their beaches at low tide). Liveliest restaurants and bars. Younger crowd. Can feel busy in peak season.
Tanzania's coast runs 1,424 km, from Kenya in the north to Mozambique in the south — with three major islands and some of the world's finest beaches. Here's where to go, and when.
Deepest water for year-round swimming (Zanzibar's other coasts lose their beaches at low tide). Liveliest restaurants and bars. Younger crowd. Can feel busy in peak season.
White-sand beaches protected by a barrier reef. Lower-density development. Excellent for snorkeling at low tide. Tide-dependent swimming — high tide morning, afflicted at low. Our favourite for families and quiet beach time.
Long expansive beaches. Kitesurfing capital (Jun-Sep winds). Seaweed farms at low tide. Younger, more rustic accommodation. Tide-dependent for swimming.
Far less developed than Zanzibar, serious diving destination with some of Africa's finest coral. A handful of premium lodges. Long transfers. For remote-seekers who've done Zanzibar already.
Part of a marine protected area. Whale shark season Oct-Feb. Dhow-style sailing. Relaxed pace, small-lodge scene. One of our favourite quiet-coast options.
The quietest coast, accessible from Arusha without a flight. Simple lodges, empty beaches, cultural villages, mangrove-lined rivers. Not for luxury seekers but a refreshing alternative.
Traditional Swahili sailing boats. Best from Zanzibar's west coast (Kendwa) or Mafia. Typically 2-3 hours with snacks and drinks.
Mnemba Atoll (northeast Zanzibar), Pemba's reefs, and Mafia's Chole Bay are the top spots. Year-round viable, best visibility Oct-Feb.
UNESCO-listed, 8-10 century old Swahili trading port. Half-day walks with a cultural guide — architecture, spice trade history, slave-trade memorials.
Zanzibar's historical identity. Tour a working clove/vanilla/pepper farm, smell and taste every spice, lunch at the farm. Half-day.
Paje is the center. June-September is the main wind season, with steady 15-25 knot cross-onshore wind. Schools at all levels, certification available.
Mafia Island specifically. October through February. World-class — these are residents, not migrants. Respectful in-water encounters.
Classic wind-down. 7 days safari Northern Circuit → 4-5 days Zanzibar NE coast. The most common pairing we arrange.
Deeper dive into Zanzibar. 3 nights Stone Town boutique → 4-5 nights east coast → 2 nights Pemba or Mafia optional.
Europe-Middle East business travelers adding a long weekend. Nungwi or Kendwa beachfront. Direct flights from Europe/Gulf.
Zanzibar + Pemba + Mafia. For dive-focused or slow-paced travel. Water-taxi transfers, ultra-remote pace.
We arrange the full chain — internal flights from safari, hand-picked beach lodges, activities booked in advance. Tell us the vibe you want and we'll position you.
