Where the Herds Are

The migration is continuous — never 'happening' vs 'not happening'. Here's exactly where to go each month.
Jan
Calving begins
Southern Serengeti (Ndutu)
Best base: Ndutu plains

Last births cluster now. Predator density peaks. Easy game viewing. Warm days, cool nights.

Feb
Peak calving
Southern Serengeti (Ndutu)
Best base: Ndutu plains

500,000 calves born in ~3 weeks. Lions, cheetahs, hyenas saturated with prey. Photography at its best.

Mar
Herds begin moving north
Southern → Central Serengeti
Best base: Central Serengeti

Calves strong enough to march. Herds start spreading north. Rains beginning to green plains.

Apr
Long rains, herds diffuse
Central Serengeti
Best base: Seronera

Many operators advise against green season. We say: go. Crowds halve, animals plentiful, prices drop.

May
Herds concentrate for Grumeti
Western Corridor
Best base: Grumeti Reserves

Mating season. Large bachelor herds. Herds build up along the Grumeti River ahead of the first crossing.

Jun
Grumeti river crossings
Western Corridor
Best base: Grumeti Reserves

First major crossings. Crocodiles active. Less famous than Mara crossings but extraordinary and less crowded.

Jul
Mara crossings begin
Northern Serengeti
Best base: Kogatende / Mara River

The iconic event. First crossings — some reverse, some push north. Peak travel season begins.

Aug
Peak crossings
Northern Serengeti / Mara
Best base: Kogatende

Most dramatic period. Book Kogatende camps 10+ months ahead. Single mass crossings of 10,000+.

Sep
Continued crossings
Northern Serengeti / Mara
Best base: Kogatende

Crossings continue both directions as herds chase rain. Slightly less frantic than August.

Oct
Return crossings
Northern Serengeti / Mara
Best base: Kogatende

Short rains stirring. Herds begin pushing south. Return crossings — less famous, equally dramatic.

Nov
Short rains, southward push
Eastern → Central Serengeti
Best base: Ngorongoro rim camps, Central

Herds spread across the eastern plains heading back south. Excellent birding. Quieter than peak.

Dec
Herds arrive south, calving begins
Central → Southern Serengeti
Best base: Ndutu plains

Vanguard births begin. Herds settling into southern calving grounds. Holiday season crowds — book early.

Four headline events

The Key Moments

Late Jan – Feb

Calving

Ndutu / southern Serengeti

500,000 wildebeest born in three weeks. Highest predator activity of the year. Often preferred over crossings — less crowded, higher visibility.

May – Jun

Grumeti Crossings

Western Corridor

The 'first crossings' — less famous than Mara crossings but equally dramatic with giant crocodiles. Smaller crowds, private camps.

Jul – Oct

Mara River Crossings

Northern Serengeti (Kogatende)

The iconic migration image. Tens of thousands stampeding into crocodile-infested waters. Book camps 10+ months ahead for peak weeks.

Nov – Dec

Southward Push

Eastern → Central Serengeti

Reverse migration as short rains pull herds south. Less photographed, intimate experience. Excellent for birders and repeat visitors.
