What Each Age Needs

A safari that's too slow for teens but too fast for grandparents works for nobody. Planning by age group lets everyone thrive.
Ages 4-8

Young children

What worksShorter game drives (2-3 hours), kid-friendly lodges with pools, animal tracking lessons with guide, Junior Ranger programs where available, no long road-transfer days.

AvoidFull-day drives, 5am starts, bush walks, very remote camps without medical facilities nearby.

Ages 9-13

Pre-teens

What worksFull game drive capability, cultural village visits, optional walking safaris, lodges with activity programs, photography tutorials for kids, night drives where permitted.

AvoidNothing significant. This age group genuinely loves the whole safari experience.

Ages 14-17

Teenagers

What worksTreated as adults for most purposes. Walking safaris, canoeing, Kilimanjaro trekking viable. Photography masterclasses, cultural immersion, optional independent activity time at lodge.

AvoidOver-structuring. Give them optional time and independence during downtime.

Ages 65+

Grandparents

What worksLower-altitude destinations (skip Ngorongoro if mobility-limited), comfortable lodges over tented camps, shorter game drive blocks, walking optional not required.

AvoidVery rough roads (some Tarangire stretches), high-altitude camps, multi-day Kilimanjaro attempts without doctor clearance.
