Why this10-Day Great Migration Safari Works

Most of the drama of the migration happens far from Arusha, in the north of the Serengeti, where the herds cross the Mara River between July and October. Ten days lets you get there without rushing: a night in Karatu, a night in the central Serengeti, then two nights at a camp by the river.

On the way back you stop where the eight-day trips cannot. You sleep in the Ngorongoro highlands, close to the crater, so you are down on the floor soon after the gate opens, then finish with Lake Manyara and a last night in Arusha before your flight.

The Journey

✦

This is how the trip usually runs. Your guide will adjust each day around the weather, the wildlife and what you most want to see.

Day01
Arusha

Karibu, Tanzania

Your driver-guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and gives you a short introduction to the trip. It is about an hour’s drive west to Arusha, past coffee and banana farms on the lower slopes of Mount Meru.

The rest of the day is yours. Have a swim, book a massage or simply sleep off the flight. The safari starts after breakfast tomorrow.

Good to know

Meals and drinks on arrival day are not included, so you can eat when your flight allows.

Day02
Arusha → Tarangire National Park → Karatu

The Park of Giants

You drive about three hours south to Tarangire National Park, which has one of the biggest elephant populations in East Africa. In the dry months the Tarangire River draws herds of a hundred or more, and the huge baobab trees stand bare and grey along the ridges.

You game-drive through the day with a picnic lunch in the park, looking for lions under the trees, giraffes, zebras and the small, shy dik-dik. In the late afternoon you drive up to Karatu for the night.

Good to know

Tonight’s dinner includes drinks. The lodge may charge extra for premium wines and spirits.

Onto the Endless Plains

After breakfast you climb through the forest to the Ngorongoro rim and drop down to the Serengeti plains. The drive to the central Serengeti takes about four hours, with game on the way and a stop at Naabi Hill for the park entry.

The Seronera Valley has water all year, so it holds lions, leopards and cheetahs even when the migration has gone north. In the afternoon your guide works the river and the kopjes, the granite outcrops where lions like to lie in the sun.

North to the Mara
Day04
Central Serengeti → Northern Serengeti

Following the Herds North

Today is a long, slow game drive north through the Lobo hills to the northern Serengeti, about four to five hours. The land gets greener and hillier, and as you go north you start to see the columns of wildebeest and zebra that make up the migration.

You reach your camp near the Mara River in the afternoon. If the herds are close, your guide may take you to the water for the last light.

Field note

The north is also good for elephants and for the Lamai wedge across the river, where the lions have big territories and few vehicles.

Day05
Northern Serengeti · Kogatende

A Full Day at the Crossings

You spend the whole day around Kogatende and the Mara River. The herds bunch up on the bank, sometimes for hours, then one animal jumps and thousands follow through the current. Big crocodiles wait below, and lions and hyenas stay close.

Your guide keeps in touch with other guides by radio and moves you to wherever the herds are building. Lunch is a picnic, so you never have to leave a promising spot.

Honest note

Crossings happen when the herds decide. Some days there are several, some days none. A full day at the river gives you a good chance, but nobody can promise one.

Day06
Northern Serengeti → Central Serengeti

South to Seronera

After a last early drive by the river, you head back south to the central Serengeti, about four to five hours with game on the way. You leave the northern hills behind and come out onto the open plains dotted with acacia trees.

In the afternoon you explore a different corner of the Seronera area than on Day 3. The open grass is good for cheetahs, which hunt in daylight and often use a termite mound as a lookout.

Day07
Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro Conservation Area

A Night Above the Crater

You game-drive out of the Serengeti in the morning and cross the plains to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, about three hours. On the way you pass Maasai herders with their cattle and the short-grass plains where the herds spend the rainy season.

In the afternoon you climb to your lodge on the crater highlands. The air is cool at over 2,000 metres, and in the evening you can sit by a fire and look over the crater you’ll drive into tomorrow.

Good to know

Nights in the crater highlands are cold, even in the dry season. Pack a fleece and a warm hat.

Day08
Ngorongoro Crater → Karatu

Down Into the Caldera

Because you slept close to the crater, you are at the descent road early, while the light is soft and the crater is quiet. The road drops about 600 metres to a floor of grassland, swamp and a soda lake, home to lions, buffalo, hyenas and old elephant bulls.

This is also the best place in Tanzania to look for black rhino. You have a picnic lunch at the hippo pool, then climb out in the afternoon and drive about 30 minutes to Karatu.

Under the Rift wall
Day09
Karatu → Lake Manyara National Park → Arusha

Forest, Lake and Rift Wall

It is about 30 minutes down the escarpment to Lake Manyara National Park. You start in the groundwater forest, full of baboons and blue monkeys, then come out onto the lake shore under the steep wall of the Rift Valley.

Look for elephants in the forest, the lions that sometimes rest up in the acacias, and flamingos and pelicans on the lake. After a picnic lunch you drive about three hours back to Arusha for your last night.

Field note

Manyara’s tree-climbing lions are real but not easy to find. The hippo pool and the forest walkway near the gate are good stops if they don’t show.

Time to Say Goodbye

The morning is free to rest, pack or walk in the hotel gardens. At a time that suits your flight, your driver collects you from your hotel in Arusha for the one-hour transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport, where the tour ends.

Good to know

If your flight leaves late, ask us about a day room or a coffee farm visit near Arusha. We can also add a flight to Zanzibar instead of going home.

Good questions

Before You Book

It has two extra nights. One is in the Ngorongoro highlands, close to the crater, so you start the crater early and without a long drive first. The other is a last night in Arusha, so you are not driving from the parks on the day you fly. The lodges and camps are also a step up.

No one can. From July to October the herds cross often, but they choose when. You have two nights near the river and a full day there on Day 5, which gives you a good chance. Even on a quiet day the herds and predators around the river are worth seeing.

Drinks are included with meals at The Retreat at Ngorongoro or Kitela Lodge on Day 2, though premium wines and spirits may cost extra. On the other days drinks are not included, apart from water, tea and coffee on safari.

Yes. A light-aircraft flight from the northern Serengeti can save most of a day on the road. It isn’t included in this price, so ask us and we’ll quote it for your dates.
