Why this 15-Day Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Trip Works

Most safari-and-beach trips squeeze the parks. This one doesn’t. You get nine days on the mainland, with three nights in Karatu and three in the central Serengeti, so you spend less time packing and more time out on game drives.

The route starts gently with a walk in Arusha National Park and a village day at Mto wa Mbu, then builds to the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. After that you fly to Zanzibar for five nights of warm sea, white sand and nothing you have to do.

The Journey

✦

This is how the trip usually runs. Your guide will adjust each day around the weather, the wildlife and what you most want to see.

Day01
Arusha

Karibu, Tanzania

Your driver-guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and gives you a short introduction to the trip. It is about an hour’s drive west to Arusha, with Mount Meru ahead of you.

Your first night is at a small guest house outside town. The evening is yours to rest after the flight.

Good to know

Meals and drinks on arrival day are not included, so you can eat when your flight allows.

A Walk Below Mount Meru

It is only about 45 minutes to Arusha National Park, a small, green park on the slopes of Mount Meru. You drive past the Ngurdoto Crater and the Momella Lakes, where flamingos feed in the shallows, and look for giraffes, buffalo, zebras and black-and-white colobus monkeys in the forest.

Part of the day is on foot: a walking safari with an armed ranger, who shows you tracks, plants and birds you would miss from the car. In the afternoon you drive back to the same guest house in Arusha.

Good to know

Meals today are not included, as on arrival day. The ranger’s walking fee is also not included in the price.

Where the Baobabs Grow

You drive about three hours south to Tarangire National Park. It is known for big elephant herds, especially in the dry months when they gather at the Tarangire River, and for the huge, ancient baobab trees that stand across its ridges.

You game-drive through the day with a picnic lunch in the park, looking for lions, giraffes, zebras and the colourful birds of the riverbanks. In the late afternoon you drive up the Rift Valley wall to Karatu, your base for the next three nights.

Day04
Karatu → Mto wa Mbu → Karatu

A Day in Mto wa Mbu

Today is a break from the car. You drive about 30 minutes down to Mto wa Mbu, a busy market town at the foot of the Rift Valley wall, where people from many different Tanzanian tribes live and farm side by side.

A local guide walks you through the banana and rice fields, past craftsmen and the market, and you stop for a home-cooked local lunch. In the afternoon you return to Karatu to rest.

Good to know

You can swap part of the walk for a mountain-bike ride through the farms. It costs extra, so ask us for the price.

Forest and Flamingos

It is about 30 minutes to Lake Manyara National Park, and you have the full day there. You start in the groundwater forest near the gate, full of baboons and blue monkeys, then drive along the shore under the steep wall of the Rift Valley.

Look for elephants among the trees, the lions that sometimes rest up in the acacias, and flamingos, pelicans and storks on the lake. You have a picnic lunch in the park and return to Karatu for the night.

Field note

Manyara’s tree-climbing lions are real but hard to find. Your guide will check the big acacias along the southern tracks.

Day06
Karatu → Central Serengeti

Out to the Serengeti

After breakfast you climb through the forest past the Ngorongoro rim and drop down onto the short-grass plains. The drive to the central Serengeti takes about four hours, with game on the way and a stop at Naabi Hill for the park entry.

You reach your tented camp in the afternoon and head straight out on a game drive around Seronera, where the river valleys have water all year.

Two Days with the Big Cats

You have two full days to explore the central Serengeti. Because the Seronera area never dries out, it holds lions, leopards and cheetahs all year. Your guide checks the granite kopjes for lions, the sausage trees along the river for leopards and the open plains for cheetahs.

Where the migration is depends on the month. From about December to March the herds are to the south, and from July to October in the far north. If they pass through while you are here, your guide will find them. You can take picnic lunches and stay out all day, or come back to camp at midday.

Field note

Ask your guide about a hot-air balloon flight over the plains at sunrise. It is optional, so ask us for the price.

Day09
Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Karatu

Down Into the Crater

You leave early and drive about three hours to the Ngorongoro Crater, then down the steep road to the floor, about 600 metres below the rim. The crater is about 20 km across, with grassland, swamps and a soda lake, and the animals have no reason to leave.

Look for lions, buffalo, hyenas, old elephant bulls and, with luck, a black rhino. You have a picnic lunch at the hippo pool, then climb out and drive about 30 minutes to Karatu.

Good to know

The crater rim is over 2,000 metres high and cold in the early morning. Keep a warm layer handy.

Fly to Zanzibar

After breakfast your guide drives you to Arusha Airport for your flight to Zanzibar. Depending on the flight schedule, you may fly from the Lake Manyara airstrip instead, which is much closer to Karatu.

The flight to Zanzibar takes about 1 hour 20 minutes. You are met at the airport and driven to your beach hotel, where the rest of the day is yours.

Four Days by the Sea

These four days are yours. Swim in the warm, clear water, read under a palm tree or walk the beach at low tide, when on many beaches the sea pulls far back and local women tend their seaweed farms in the shallows.

If you want to do more, you can book a day in Stone Town, with its carved doors and narrow lanes, a spice farm tour, snorkelling on the reef or a sunset dhow cruise. We can arrange them for you, at extra cost.

Good to know

Much of Zanzibar’s coast has big tides. Ask at the hotel for the tide times so you can plan your swims.

Time to Say Goodbye

Enjoy a last morning by the sea. At a time that suits your flight, your driver takes you to Zanzibar Airport, where the tour ends.

When to Go

The trip runs all year. From June to October the parks are dry and the animals gather at the water, and Zanzibar is sunny and breezy. January to March is warm and green, with the herds on the southern plains. April and May bring the long rains and the lowest prices.

Good questions

Before You Book

Yes. The scheduled flight from Arusha to Zanzibar is in the price, and so are the airport transfers on Zanzibar. Your international flight home from Zanzibar is not included, so book it to leave from Zanzibar Airport on Day 15.

It depends on when you travel. The herds spend December to March on the southern plains and July to October in the far north, and pass through the central Serengeti in between. Your three nights at Seronera are good for big cats in any month. If you want to follow the herds, tell us your dates and we can adjust the Serengeti camps.

Karatu sits between Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the crater, so you can see all three without moving hotel. It also gives you a slower middle to the trip, with the village day at Mto wa Mbu as a break from game drives.

Yes. The drives are mostly short, the pace is relaxed, and the beach days at the end are an easy reward. See our family safari guide for more.
