Why this7-Day Tanzania Safari Works

On shorter trips the Serengeti gets one full day, and you spend much of it wondering what is over the next rise. Here you get two full days on the plains from the same camp. That is time to work the Seronera River for leopards one day and drive out to the kopjes, or towards the herds, the next.

The rest of the route is the classic northern circuit: Tarangire on the way out, the crater and Lake Manyara on the way home. The lodges are simple, friendly and well placed, which keeps the price down without cutting park time.

The Journey

✦

This is how the trip usually runs. Your guide will adjust each day around the weather, the wildlife and what you most want to see.

Day01
Kilimanjaro Airport → Arusha

Hello, Arusha

When you land at Kilimanjaro International Airport, your guide is there to meet you. You’ll have a short chat about the week, then drive about an hour to Arusha, the busy safari town under Mount Meru.

Your first night is at a friendly guest house or a villa on a coffee farm. Have a shower, get some sleep and be ready for an early breakfast.

Good to know

Food and drinks on Day 1 are not included, as arrival times vary so much. Your hosts can make you dinner.

Red Dust & Elephants

It is about three hours south to Tarangire National Park, one of the best places in Tanzania for elephants. They dust themselves red in the dry months and gather along the Tarangire River, walking in family groups between huge, grey baobab trees.

Your guide will also look for lions resting in the shade, giraffes, zebras and the big herds of buffalo that come down to drink. After a picnic lunch you drive two hours up to Karatu for the night, where the air turns cool after the heat of the valley.

Over the Rim, Onto the Plains

After breakfast you drive up through the misty forest on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater, then down into open Maasai grazing land, with herders in red and blue cloth walking beside their cattle.

Past Naabi Hill gate you are in the Serengeti. The drive to the central plains takes about four hours, but you game-drive most of it, stopping for gazelles, hyenas, jackals and whatever else is out there. You stop for lunch on the way and reach your tented camp in the afternoon.

Day04
Central Serengeti · Seronera Valley

Along the Seronera

Your first full day starts early, when the cats are still moving. The Seronera River valley is the centre of the park and has water all year, so the game stays put. Your guide will scan the sausage trees and fever trees along the river for leopards and check the kopjes where the lion prides spend the day.

Cheetahs hunt on the open grass nearby, often in the morning. You can take a picnic lunch and stay out, or come back to camp in the heat of the day and go out again later.

Field note

Look for a tail hanging down from a branch. Leopards sleep in the trees along the Seronera in the day, and a dangling tail is often the only thing you’ll see at first.

Further Afield

With a second full day you can go further. Depending on the season, your guide may take you to the Moru kopjes, great granite domes in the south-west of the central plains, or east to the Gol and Simba kopjes, where cheetahs and lions use the rocks as lookouts.

If the wildebeest and zebra herds are within reach of camp, this is the day to go and find them. You take a picnic lunch and stay out as long as you like, then return to the same camp for your third night.

Honest note

The migration moves with the rain and no one can promise where it will be. Tell us your dates and we’ll give you our honest guess before you book.

The Great Caldera

You leave the Serengeti after breakfast and drive about three hours to the crater highlands. From the rim you take the steep track down the 600-metre wall into the Ngorongoro Crater, where lion, buffalo, elephant, zebra and wildebeest share one enclosed world.

Look out for flamingos on Lake Magadi, hippos at the Ngoitokitok spring and the crater’s few black rhino on the open grassland. After a picnic lunch you climb out and drive half an hour to Karatu for your last night.

Day07
Karatu → Lake Manyara National Park → Arusha

Monkeys, Hippos & Pelicans

A short drive down the escarpment brings you to Lake Manyara National Park. The first part of the park is a green groundwater forest where baboons sit in the road and blue monkeys watch from the branches. Beyond it, the floodplain opens up to the lake shore.

Hippos, pelicans and, in some months, flamingos gather on the water, with the Rift Valley wall rising behind. After a picnic lunch in the park you drive about three hours back to Arusha, where the tour ends.

Good to know

You reach Arusha in the late afternoon, so an evening flight home is fine. We can also book a night in Arusha or a flight to Zanzibar.

Timing & price

When to Go

The central Serengeti has lions, leopards and cheetahs all year, so this trip works in any month. June to September is dry and the easiest time to spot game. The migration herds usually pass through the central plains around April and May, and again around November. April and May are wet, quiet and the cheapest time to travel.

Good questions

Before You Book

For most people, yes. The Serengeti is huge, and the drive in and out takes up most of a day each way. A third night gives you two full days there, so you can explore different areas and spend longer with a sighting instead of hurrying on.

Comfortable, in a simple way. These are proper safari tented camps, with all your meals in camp and the sounds of the plains at night. They are plainer than the luxury camps on our other versions of this route, but you are just as close to the animals, and you get the same guide and vehicle.

Usually as they move north around April and May, and again when they come south around November. It changes every year with the rain. Tell us your dates and we’ll tell you honestly what to expect.

Yes. Arusha National Park is about 45 minutes from town and is good for giraffe, buffalo and colobus monkeys on the slopes of Mount Meru. Adding it makes this an eight-day trip. Ask us and we’ll send you the new price.
