Why thisMara River Crossing Safari Works

From July to October the herds of the great migration are in the far north of the Serengeti, going back and forth across the Mara River. This trip puts you there for two nights, at a camp near Kogatende, so you have one full day by the water and time to wait for a crossing.

Getting there takes a few days, and the route uses them well. You see Tarangire’s elephants on the way up, the central Serengeti’s big cats on both sides of the river days, then the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara on the way back to Arusha. Mid-range lodges and tented camps keep the price down without cutting the time in the parks.

The Journey

✦

This is how the trip usually runs. Your guide will adjust each day around the weather, the wildlife and what you most want to see.

Karibu, Tanzania

Your driver-guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and gives you a short briefing on the week ahead. Then it is about an hour’s drive west to Arusha, with Mount Meru ahead of you and, on a clear day, Kilimanjaro behind.

Your first night is at a small guest house outside town. Have an early dinner and a good sleep. Tomorrow starts after breakfast.

Meals and drinks on arrival day are not included, so you can eat when your flight allows.

Baobabs and Elephants

You drive about three hours south to Tarangire National Park. In July and August the Tarangire River is the main water for miles around, and elephant families walk down to it in long lines between the baobab trees.

You spend the day on game drives along the river and the swamps, looking for lions, giraffes, zebras and big flocks of birds, with a picnic lunch in the park. In the late afternoon you climb the Rift Valley escarpment to Karatu, where the nights are cool.

Day03
Karatu → Central Serengeti

Into the Serengeti

After breakfast you drive up past the Ngorongoro Crater rim and down onto the short-grass plains. It is about four hours to the central Serengeti, and you game-drive most of the way, stopping at the Naabi Hill gate for the park entry.

The Seronera area has water all year, so lions, leopards and cheetahs stay here even when the herds have gone north. Your guide will check the granite kopjes for lions and the sausage trees along the river for a resting leopard.

Field note

The river valleys around Seronera are one of the best places in Africa for leopard. Look for a tail hanging down from a big tree.

Day04
Central Serengeti → Kogatende

North to the River

Today you drive north through the Lobo hills and the woodlands of the northern Serengeti. It takes about four to five hours, and it is a game drive all the way: elephants, giraffes and, as you get closer to the river, the first big groups of wildebeest and zebra.

You reach your camp in the Kogatende area in the afternoon, close to the Mara River. If the herds are near, your guide may take you straight to the water before sunset.

Northern Serengeti · Kogatende

A Day at the Mara

This is a full day by the Mara River. The herds gather on the banks, sometimes for hours, before one animal goes in and the rest follow. Crocodiles wait in the brown water, and lions and hyenas watch from the grass.

Your guide knows the crossing points and talks with other guides by radio, so you move to where the herds are building up. You take a picnic lunch, so you do not have to leave the river in the middle of the day.

Honest note

Crossings happen on their own schedule. Some days there are several, some days none. A full day at the river gives you the best chance, but nobody can promise one.

Day06
Kogatende → Central Serengeti

Back Through the Plains

After an early look at the river, you drive back south to the central Serengeti, about four to five hours with game on the way. The land changes from the northern hills and woodland to open plains with scattered acacia trees.

In the afternoon you explore a different part of the Seronera area from Day 3. The open plains here are good for cheetahs, which hunt by day and like a termite mound or a car bonnet as a lookout.

Day07
Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Karatu

A Morning in the Crater

You leave early and drive about three hours to the Ngorongoro Crater, then down the steep road to the floor. The crater is about 20 km across, with grassland, a soda lake, swamps and a small forest, and the animals do not need to leave.

Look for lion, buffalo, elephant bulls with long tusks and, if you are lucky, a black rhino in the open grass. You eat a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then climb out and drive about 30 minutes to Karatu.

Good to know

This is the longest day of the trip. Bring a warm layer: the crater rim is over 2,000 metres high and cold in the early morning.

Day08
Karatu → Lake Manyara National Park → Arusha

Last Drive at Lake Manyara

It is only about 30 minutes down the escarpment to Lake Manyara National Park. The park is small and green, with groundwater forest near the gate, baboons on the road and elephants under the Rift Valley wall.

The lions here sometimes rest up in the acacia trees, and the lake shore can be pink with flamingos. After a picnic lunch you drive about three hours back to Arusha, where the tour ends.

Good to know

The tour ends in Arusha in the late afternoon. Tell us if you want a night in Arusha, a transfer to the airport or a flight to Zanzibar and we’ll add it.

When It Runs

This trip runs only from 15 July to 30 October, when the herds are in the northern Serengeti and crossing the Mara River. It is also the dry season, so the grass is short and animals are easy to see.

Good questions

Before You Book

We can’t promise one. Between July and October the herds cross the Mara often, but they decide when. You have a full day at the river on Day 5, plus the afternoon of Day 4 and the morning of Day 6, which gives you a good chance. Even without a crossing, the herds, the crocodiles and the predators around them are worth the trip.

The northern camps move or open with the season, so we confirm the exact camp when you book. It will be Untamed Migration Camp, Mara River Camp or one of the same standard in the Kogatende area, and you approve it first.

Quite a lot. The Serengeti is big, and the drives north and south take four to five hours each way. They are game drives, though, with your guide stopping for anything worth seeing. If you would rather fly one leg, ask us and we’ll price it.

Yes. The trip ends in Arusha, so it is easy to add a flight to Zanzibar and a few beach days. Tell us how many nights you’d like and we’ll send you the new route and price.
