Why thisLuxury Mara River Crossing Safari Works

The river crossings happen in the far north of the Serengeti, a long way from Arusha. Many trips reach the Mara for one night and leave again. This one gives you a full day at Kogatende between two nights at Lemala Kuria Hills, so your guide can wait at the crossing points with you instead of rushing off.

Getting there by road also means you see the whole park. You drive north through the Central Serengeti, where lions and leopards live all year, and come back the same way with a second chance at the cats before the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara. Every night is in one of the best lodges or camps in its area.

The Journey

✦

This is how the trip usually runs. Your guide will adjust each day around the weather, the wildlife and what you most want to see.

Day01
Arusha

A Quiet Start in Arusha

Your driver-guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and talks you through the week. The drive west to Arusha takes about an hour, with Kilimanjaro behind you and Mount Meru ahead.

You stay just outside town, away from the traffic, with a garden to sit in. Take the afternoon to rest after your flight; tomorrow is an early start.

Day02
Arusha → Tarangire National Park → Karatu

Tarangire at Its Best

You travel in the dry season, which is the best time for Tarangire National Park. After a three-hour drive you reach a park where most of the water has gone, and the elephants gather along the Tarangire River in herds that can number in the hundreds.

Your guide will follow the river for elephants, buffalo, lions and the big herds of zebra and wildebeest that stay here in the dry months. After a picnic lunch you drive two hours up to Karatu, in the green farmland below the crater.

Field note

In the dry season, elephants dig in the sandy riverbed for water. Watch for them scooping out holes with their feet and trunks, and for the other animals that queue to drink after them.

Karatu → Central Serengeti

First Night in the Serengeti

The road climbs past the Ngorongoro Crater rim and drops down to the Serengeti’s southern plains, which are dry and golden at this time of year. It takes about four hours to reach the Central Serengeti, game driving on the way.

The Seronera Valley has water all year, so it is one of the best places in Africa to see big cats. Look for lions on the kopjes and leopards in the riverside trees before you reach camp for the night.

The Long Road North

Today you drive to the far north of the park, about four to five hours through the Lobo hills and the woodland along the Kenyan border. It is a full day on the road, but it is all inside the Serengeti, so your guide will stop for whatever you meet on the way.

By the afternoon you reach Kogatende, where the Mara River winds through open plains. If the herds are near, you may have time for a first look at the river before you reach Lemala Kuria Hills, high on a ridge above the water.

Good to know

The northern Serengeti is quieter than the centre, with fewer lodges and vehicles, so sightings here often feel more private.

Day05
Kogatende · Mara River

A Full Day at the River

You have the whole day at the Mara River. Your guide will take you along the banks to the crossing points, where herds of wildebeest and zebra bunch up on the edge, sometimes for hours, before one animal jumps and the rest follow. Big Nile crocodiles and pods of hippos live in the river.

You take a picnic lunch so you don’t have to leave if the herds are building. Between crossings there is plenty to watch: lions and hyenas following the herds, vultures on the banks, and the rolling plains around Kogatende.

Honest note

No one can promise a crossing. The herds decide when to go, and some days they gather at the river and turn back. A full day here gives you a good chance, but it is still wildlife, not a timetable.

Second Chance at the Cats

After breakfast you drive back south to the Central Serengeti, about four to five hours with game viewing along the way. Your guide may take a different track from the one you came on, through other parts of the northern woodland.

You arrive in time for an afternoon drive around Seronera. If you missed a leopard or a cheetah on Day 3, this is your second chance.

Day07
Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Karatu

Down Into the Crater

You leave the Serengeti early and drive about three hours to the Ngorongoro Crater. The road goes down the crater wall to a floor of grassland, swamp and a shallow soda lake, where buffalo, zebras, lions, hyenas and the rare black rhino live all year.

You stop for a picnic lunch by the hippo pool, then climb out in the afternoon and drive about 30 minutes to your lodge in Karatu.

Good to know

This is a long day, with an early start from the Serengeti. It is worth it: the crater is the best place on this route to look for black rhino.

Day08
Karatu → Lake Manyara National Park → Arusha

Lake Manyara, Last Stop

It is 30 minutes from Karatu down to Lake Manyara National Park, which lies along the foot of the Rift Valley wall. You start in a forest fed by underground springs, where baboons and blue monkeys cross the road, then come out onto the lake shore to look for elephants, buffalo, giraffes and water birds.

After a picnic lunch you drive about three hours back to Arusha, where your safari ends.

When This Trip Runs

Only in crossing season, from 15 July to 30 October. The first herds usually reach the Mara River in July, crossings are most frequent in August and September, and in October the last herds cross before the rains turn them south. It is also the dry season, so Tarangire and the crater are at their best.

Good questions

Before You Book

We can’t promise one. In August and September crossings happen on many days, but the herds choose when to go, and some days they gather at the bank and turn back. That is why this trip gives you two nights and a whole day at Kogatende rather than a quick visit.

Driving lets you see the Central Serengeti on the way up and on the way back, and keeps the same guide and vehicle with you all week. The drives north are long, about four to five hours, but they are game drives through the park, not highway. If you’d rather fly one way, ask us and we’ll quote it.

The lodges. You stay at places like Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge, Gibb’s Farm and Lemala Kuria Hills, with drinks included at the lodges and camps. The private vehicle and guide are the same high standard on all our trips.

Yes. The safari ends in Arusha, and the scheduled flight to Zanzibar takes about 1 hr 20 min. August to October is dry and warm on the coast, so it is a good time for the beach.
