Why this7-Day Ngorongoro Crater Safari Works

Seven days lets you see the four big parks of the north without rushing any of them. You get two nights in the Central Serengeti, where the big cats live all year, and you come back through the Ngorongoro highlands, so the crater is a morning stop on the way home and not a long detour.

The lodges are comfortable and simple: a guest house in Arusha, farm lodges in Karatu and tented camps in the Serengeti. That keeps the price down and puts the money where it counts, into your own vehicle and guide for the whole week.

The Journey

✦

This is how the trip usually runs. Your guide will adjust each day around the weather, the wildlife and what you most want to see.

Karibu Arusha
Day01
Arusha

A Soft Landing

Your guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport, runs through the week ahead with you and drives you west to Arusha. It takes about an hour, past banana farms and roadside markets, with Mount Meru ahead of you.

Your guest house is small and quiet, with a garden to sit in. There is nothing planned for the rest of the day, so you can sleep off the flight.

Good to know

Food and drinks today are at your own cost, so you can eat whenever your flight gets in.

Elephants Under the Baobabs

After breakfast you drive about three hours south to Tarangire National Park. The park is known for its elephants, and in the dry months they come down to the Tarangire River in family groups, sometimes dozens at a time. The fat, grey baobabs along the road can be more than a thousand years old.

You game drive through the day, with a picnic lunch at one of the park’s picnic sites. Look for lions resting in the shade, giraffes, zebras and big flocks of birds. In the late afternoon you drive up the Rift Valley wall to Karatu, a farming town that is cool at night.

Day03
Karatu → Central Serengeti

Across to the Serengeti

You leave early and climb past the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, then drop down onto the short-grass plains of the Serengeti. The drive takes about four hours, but your guide will stop for whatever is out there: gazelles, ostriches, Maasai herders with their cattle.

You enter the park at Naabi Hill Gate and game drive north to the Seronera area in the centre of the park. The Seronera River has water all year, so lions, leopards and cheetahs stay close by. You reach your tented camp before dark.

Field note

Look for leopards in the sausage trees and yellow-barked acacias along the Seronera River. They drape themselves along a branch in the heat of the day.

Day04
Central Serengeti

A Full Day With the Cats

Today there is no driving between places, just game drives. Your guide knows where the local prides have been and will head out early, when lions are most active and the light is soft. The granite kopjes, rocky outcrops on the plain, are a good place to look for lions and hyraxes.

You can take a picnic and stay out all day, or come back to camp for lunch and a rest. Whether the big wildebeest herds are near depends on the month: they pass through the central Serengeti on their way north and south, but the resident animals are here all year.

Honest note

The Great Migration moves with the rain, so we can’t promise you’ll see it on this trip. Check the month table below to see where the herds usually are when you travel.

Day05
Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro highlands

Back Up to the Highlands

You have one more morning drive in the Serengeti, then head back south and east across the plains. You leave the park at Naabi Hill Gate and climb into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where Maasai families graze their cattle next to zebras.

The drive to the crater highlands takes about three hours. Tonight you sleep close to the crater rim. It is high up, at over 2,000 metres, and much colder than the plains, so have a warm jacket ready.

Good to know

Being on the rim tonight means a short drive to the descent road tomorrow, so you can be on the crater floor soon after the gates open.

Day06
Ngorongoro Crater → Karatu

A Morning on the Crater Floor

After an early breakfast you drive down the steep road into the Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic caldera about 20 km across with its own lake, swamps and grassland. Because the walls hold animals in, you can see a lot in a few hours: buffalo, lions, hyenas, zebras, wildebeest and, if you are lucky, black rhino far out on the plain.

You have a picnic lunch at the hippo pool, then drive back up the crater wall in the afternoon. From the gate it is about 30 minutes down to your farm lodge in Karatu.

Day07
Karatu → Lake Manyara National Park → Arusha

Last Drive at Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara is only 30 minutes down the hill from Karatu. The park is small, with a thick groundwater forest at the entrance where baboons and blue monkeys play on the road, and open floodplains by the lake where you can see elephants, buffalo, hippos and, in some months, pink flamingos.

The lions here sometimes climb trees, but it doesn’t happen every day. After a picnic lunch and a last game drive, you drive about three hours back to Arusha, where the tour ends.

Good to know

You reach Arusha in the late afternoon. If you fly out tonight, tell us your flight time and we’ll plan the day so you get to the airport with time to spare.

Timing & price

When to Go

This route is good all year, because the Seronera area and the crater have animals in every month. July to September is dry, clear and the busiest. January to March is green, with young animals everywhere. April and May bring the long rains, fewer vehicles and the lowest prices.

Good questions

Before You Book

Maybe, but it depends on the month. The herds cross the central Serengeti on their way north (around April to June) and back south (around November), and spend the rest of the year elsewhere. The Seronera area has lions, leopards and cheetahs all year, so the Serengeti days are good whenever you come. If the migration is your main reason for going, look at our calving or Mara River trips.

Clean, comfortable rooms and tents with private bathrooms, good food and friendly staff, without the spas and private plunge pools of a luxury lodge. The vehicle, the guide and the parks are exactly the same as on our luxury trips.

Coming back from the Serengeti, the crater highlands are on your way. Sleeping up there on Day 5 means you can go down into the crater early on Day 6, when it is quiet and the animals are active, instead of driving there from further away.

Yes. The trip ends in Arusha, and there are short scheduled flights to Zanzibar, about 1 hr 20 min. Tell us how many beach nights you want and we’ll add them to your quote.
