Why this6-Day Tanzania Safari Works

If you only have a week off, this is the northern circuit in one tidy loop. You see all four of the big parks without doubling back more than you need to: Tarangire on the way out, the Serengeti at the far end, then the crater and Lake Manyara on the way home.

The two nights in the central Serengeti are the heart of it. That gives you one full day on the plains with no driving between lodges, which is when most of the best cat sightings happen. The lodges are simple and friendly rather than fancy, so the money goes on park time.

The Journey

✦

This is how the trip usually runs. Your guide will adjust each day around the weather, the wildlife and what you most want to see.

Kilimanjaro Airport → Arusha

Landing in Arusha

Your guide meets you in the arrivals hall at Kilimanjaro International Airport, runs through the plan for the week and loads your bags into the Land Cruiser you will use for the whole trip.

The drive west to Arusha takes about an hour, past banana farms and small roadside markets, with Mount Meru ahead of you. The rest of the day is free to rest at a small guest house on the edge of town.

Elephants Under the Baobabs

After breakfast you drive about three hours south to Tarangire National Park. The park is known for its elephants, and in the dry months family herds come down to the Tarangire River in long lines, walking between baobab trees that can be many hundreds of years old.

You spend the day on game drives, looking for lion, giraffe, zebra and the fringe-eared oryx that is rare elsewhere in the north. Lunch is a picnic at a site above the river. In the late afternoon you drive up the Rift Valley wall to Karatu, a farming town where the nights are cool.

Field note

Tarangire has more than 500 kinds of bird. Ask your guide to point out the yellow-collared lovebirds, which live only in this part of Tanzania.

Out Onto the Plains

An early breakfast, then you climb through the forest on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater and down the far side, past Maasai herders and their cattle. The trees fall away and the short-grass plains of the Serengeti open up in every direction.

The drive to the central Serengeti takes about four hours, but it is a game drive most of the way. You stop for lunch at Naabi Hill gate, then head for the Seronera area, where lions rest on the granite kopjes and cheetahs hunt the open grass. You reach camp before dark.

A Full Day With the Cats

Today there is no lodge to reach, so you can stay out from early morning until the park closes. Your guide will usually work the Seronera River valley, where the water keeps game around all year. Leopards often rest in the sausage trees and yellow-barked acacias along the river, and lion prides patrol the kopjes nearby.

Depending on the month, the big wildebeest and zebra herds may be close or far. Your guide will know where they are and whether they are worth the drive. You can take a picnic lunch or come back to camp for it.

Honest note

The migration moves with the rain, so nobody can promise the herds will be near the central Serengeti on your dates. The lions, leopards and cheetahs here stay put all year.

Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Karatu

Down to the Crater Floor

You leave the Serengeti after breakfast and drive about three hours back to the crater highlands. At the rim you take the steep road down the 600-metre wall into the Ngorongoro Crater, a sunken world of grass, swamp and a shallow soda lake.

The crater floor is packed with animals: buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, hyena and lion, flamingos on Lake Magadi and, if you are lucky, a black rhino out on the open grass. Lunch is a picnic by the hippo pool. In the afternoon you climb out and drive half an hour back to your lodge in Karatu.

Day06
Karatu → Lake Manyara National Park → Arusha

A Last Drive at Lake Manyara

After breakfast you drive half an hour down the escarpment to Lake Manyara National Park. The road in runs through a groundwater forest full of baboons and blue monkeys, then opens onto the lake shore, where hippos wallow and pelicans and flamingos feed in the shallows.

Manyara is known for lions that sometimes rest up in the acacia trees, though they are not easy to find. After a picnic lunch in the park you drive about three hours back to Arusha, where the tour ends.

Good to know

You reach Arusha in the late afternoon. If you fly out today, pick an evening flight, or let us book a night near the airport.

When to Go

This trip works all year. June to October is dry, the grass is short and animals are easy to find around water. The migration herds pass through the central Serengeti mainly on their way north and south, so ask us where they are likely to be on your dates. April and May are wet and green, with the lowest prices.

Good questions

Before You Book

Yes, just. The drive from Karatu to the central Serengeti is long, but it is a game drive most of the way. Staying two nights means you get one full day on the plains without moving camp, which makes the trip feel much less rushed.

Clean, comfortable, friendly places to stay: a guest house in Arusha, a valley lodge in Karatu and a proper tented camp in the Serengeti. You will not have spas or pools everywhere, but you get the same private vehicle, guide and park time as on our luxury trips.

Possibly, but it depends on the month. The herds follow the rain in a big loop and spend only part of the year in the central Serengeti. Tell us your dates and we’ll tell you honestly where they are likely to be, and whether a different route would suit you better.

Yes. Arusha has short scheduled flights to Zanzibar, about 1 hr 20 min. You can fly the same evening or stay a night in Arusha first. Ask us and we’ll add the flight and a beach hotel to your quote.
