Why this7-Day High-End Serengeti Safari Works

Most week-long safaris move you every night. This one doesn’t. You stay two nights in the Serengeti and two nights in the crater highlands, so you unpack twice instead of five times and spend the extra hours with the animals or at the lodge.

The lodges are chosen for that kind of trip: a plantation house on a coffee estate in Arusha, luxury tented camps away from the busy Seronera roads, and a highland lodge or historic farm near the crater gate. Drinks at the lodges are included on the safari days.

The Journey

✦

This is how the trip usually runs. Your guide will adjust each day around the weather, the wildlife and what you most want to see.

A Soft Landing

Your driver-guide is waiting when you come out of Kilimanjaro International Airport. After a short welcome and a look at the week ahead, you drive about an hour west to Arusha.

Tonight is spent at a coffee-estate lodge or a small private house on the edge of town. There is nothing to do but rest, have dinner and sleep off the flight.

Good to know

Meals are included from your first day, but drinks tonight are not. If you land late, the lodge will keep dinner for you.

The River of Elephants

After breakfast you drive about three hours south to Tarangire National Park. In the dry season the Tarangire River is the only reliable water for miles, and it pulls in elephants by the hundred, along with buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and the lions that follow them.

You spend the day between the river and the ancient baobabs, with a picnic lunch in the park. In the late afternoon you drive up the Rift Valley escarpment to Karatu, where the air is cooler and your lodge sits among the highland farms.

Where the Land Runs On

The Maasai called this place Siringet, the place where the land runs on forever. You reach it by climbing over the forested crater rim and dropping down onto the short-grass plains, where the horizon really does seem to have no end.

The drive takes about four hours, and your guide will stop for whatever is out there: gazelles, ostriches, a cheetah on a termite mound. After lunch at Naabi Hill you continue to the central Serengeti and your camp, set away from the busier roads around Seronera.

Field note

Watch the granite kopjes that rise out of the plains. Lions use them as lookouts, and in the afternoon heat they often lie right on top of the rocks.

A Whole Day on the Plains

Today is yours to use as you like. Many guests leave at first light, when the cats are most active, and take a picnic breakfast out onto the plains. Your guide will head for the Seronera River, where leopards rest in the riverside trees, or for the kopjes where cheetahs and lion prides hunt.

Where the big wildebeest and zebra herds are depends on the month and the rain. If they are within reach of camp, your guide will know. You can stay out all day with a picnic lunch or come back to camp for a quiet afternoon.

Honest note

The migration is never in the same place two years running, so we can’t promise it on your dates. What the central Serengeti does give you, all year, is some of the best big-cat viewing in Africa.

Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro Conservation Area → Karatu

Across the Highlands

A last morning drive takes you out of the Serengeti the way you came, across the southern plains. Past Naabi Hill you enter the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, where Maasai families still graze their cattle and goats alongside zebra and giraffe.

The road climbs to the crater rim, and you stop at the viewpoint for your first look down into the caldera you will explore tomorrow. You reach your lodge in Karatu by mid-afternoon, with time to rest after three days of early starts.

Good to know

On the way you pass the turn-off to Olduvai Gorge, one of the world’s most important sites for early human fossils. If you’d like to stop at the small museum there, tell us when you book.

Day06
Ngorongoro Crater → Karatu

A Full Day in the Crater

You are at the crater gate soon after it opens and down the 600-metre wall before most vehicles arrive. The Ngorongoro Crater is the largest unbroken volcanic caldera in the world, and its floor holds lion, buffalo, elephant, hyena and huge herds of zebra and wildebeest.

With a full day you can take it slowly: flamingos on the soda lake, old bull elephants in the Lerai fever-tree forest, and time to wait for a black rhino to walk out of the long grass. Lunch is a picnic at the hippo pool. You climb out in the afternoon and return to Karatu.

Day07
Karatu → Lake Manyara National Park → Arusha

Under the Escarpment

After breakfast you drive down the escarpment to Lake Manyara National Park, a narrow strip of forest, grassland and lake squeezed under the wall of the Rift Valley. Troops of baboons and blue monkeys live in the forest at the gate, and elephants feed in the mahogany and fig trees.

Out by the water you’ll see hippos, pelicans and, in some months, pink lines of flamingos. Keep an eye on the acacias too, where Manyara’s lions sometimes climb. After a picnic lunch you drive about three hours back to Arusha, where the tour ends.

Timing & price

When to Go

The central Serengeti and the crater have resident game all year, so there is no bad month for this route. June to September is dry and the easiest time to find animals. January to March is warm and green, and April and May bring the long rains, quiet parks and the lowest prices.

Good questions

Before You Book

It gives you a proper day in the Ngorongoro Crater instead of squeezing it between long drives. You cross the highlands on Day 5, rest, and go down into the crater early on Day 6 with the whole day ahead of you.

The best lodges we use on this route, with most drinks included on safari days, plus your own vehicle and guide for the whole week. You can choose between two lodges at each stop, and we’ll tell you honestly how they differ.

Yes. Some guests prefer a second morning in Tarangire, a walk in the highland forest near Karatu, or an earlier finish so they can fly to Zanzibar the same day. Tell us and we’ll re-price the last day.

It can be around midday, especially in high season. That is why we go down early. On a full crater day you can also move away from the vehicles and wait quietly where your guide expects the animals to be.
