Why this5-Day High-End Tanzania Safari Works

Five days is the shortest trip that fits the Serengeti in with the other great parks of the north. You see Tarangire’s elephants, cross the crater highlands to the central Serengeti, come back through the Ngorongoro Crater and finish at Lake Manyara on the way home.

The lodges are chosen for comfort and quiet: Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge, Neptune Ngorongoro Luxury Lodge or Gibb’s Farm in the highlands, and Lemala Nanyukie or Elewana Serengeti Pioneer Camp on the plains. In the parks, meals and most drinks are included, so you can stop thinking about money once you leave Arusha.

The Journey

✦

This is how the trip usually runs. Your guide will adjust each day around the weather, the wildlife and what you most want to see.

Arrive and Slow Down

Your driver-guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and gives you a short introduction to the trip on the hour’s drive to Arusha.

Your first night is at Elewana Arusha Coffee Lodge, set in a working coffee plantation, or at the more private Hamerkop House. Take the afternoon to rest after the flight.

Good to know

Meals at the lodge are included from today, but drinks are not. From Day 2 most drinks are included too.

Elephants Under the Baobabs

After breakfast you drive about three hours to Tarangire National Park. The park has some of the biggest elephant herds in northern Tanzania, and in the dry season they gather along the Tarangire River, where you can watch them dig for water in the sandy riverbed.

Your guide will also look for lions, giraffes and the many birds of the park during the day, with a picnic lunch at a spot above the river. In the evening you climb the Rift Valley escarpment to Karatu for the night.

Karatu → Central Serengeti

Across the Highlands to the Serengeti

Today is a travelling day with game along the way, about four hours in all. The road climbs to the Ngorongoro Crater rim, with a view down into the crater, then drops through Maasai grazing land to the short-grass plains and Naabi Hill Gate, a good place for your picnic lunch.

In the afternoon you drive into the central Serengeti around Seronera. The Seronera River is one of the best places in Tanzania for leopards, which rest in the sausage trees and acacias along it. Lions use the granite kopjes and cheetahs hunt on the open plains. If you travel between about April and June or in November and December, the migration herds may be passing through.

Honest note

A hot-air balloon flight over the Serengeti is optional; ask us for the price. It takes the whole morning, though, so on this route it means adding a second night in the Serengeti.

Day04
Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Karatu

Back East, Into the Crater

After an early breakfast you take a last game drive out of the Serengeti and drive about three hours back to the crater highlands. Then you go down the crater wall onto the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater.

The crater is a closed world of grassland, swamp and soda lake. Buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, hyenas and lions live here all year, flamingos feed on Lake Magadi and a few black rhino graze the open grass. Lunch is a picnic by the hippo pool. Later you climb out and drive 30 minutes back to your lodge in Karatu.

Good to know

This is the longest day of the trip. If you’d like to reach the crater earlier, ask your guide about a packed breakfast and a dawn start.

Day05
Lake Manyara National Park → Arusha

Manyara on the Way Home

A short drive down the escarpment takes you to Lake Manyara National Park. After the open plains of the last two days, this park feels very different: tall forest fed by springs, busy with baboons and blue monkeys, then a wide lakeshore with hippos, buffalo and waterbirds.

Lions here sometimes climb into the acacias, although it is not seen every visit. You have a picnic lunch in the park, then drive about three hours back to Arusha, where the tour ends.

When to Go

The central Serengeti has lions, leopards and cheetahs all year. The migration herds pass through it mainly from April to June on their way north, and again in November and December on the way south. June to October is dry and the easiest time for game viewing everywhere on this route.

Good questions

Before You Book

It gives you an afternoon and an early morning in the central Serengeti, which is the best area for big cats. It is a taste rather than a full stay. If you can add a day, a second Serengeti night makes the biggest difference to this trip, and we can price it for you.

It depends on the month. The herds pass through the central Serengeti mainly from April to June and in November and December. At other times they are further north or south, but Seronera still has lions, leopards, cheetahs and plenty of resident plains game. Nobody can promise where the herds will be on a given day.

Most days have two to three hours on the road. Day 3 (Karatu to the Serengeti) is about four hours, but it crosses the crater highlands and the plains, so you game-drive most of the way. Day 4 is the longest day, with a drive back from the Serengeti and a crater game drive.

From Day 2 the lodges are all-inclusive: meals and most drinks, though premium wines and spirits may be charged. On Day 1, meals at the Arusha lodge are included but drinks are not. On the last day, breakfast and lunch are included.
