Why this5-Day Luxury Tanzania Safari Works

Most short safaris stop at the crater. This one keeps going, out onto the Serengeti plains for a night, then comes back through the crater highlands, so you see four parks in five days without rushing any of them.

Each park adds something different. Tarangire for its elephants and baobabs, the central Serengeti for lion, leopard and cheetah, the Ngorongoro Crater for rhino and buffalo, and Lake Manyara for forest, baboons and birds on the way home. You sleep in a boutique hotel, a highland lodge near the crater gate and a tented camp near Seronera, and drinks with meals are included from Day 2 to Day 4.

The Journey

✦

This is how the trip usually runs. Your guide will adjust each day around the weather, the wildlife and what you most want to see.

Karibu
Day01
Kilimanjaro Airport → Arusha

Landing Below Mount Meru

Your driver-guide meets you in the arrivals hall at Kilimanjaro International Airport, holding a board with your name. On the way to the car they will run through the plan for the next five days and answer any questions.

The drive west to Arusha takes about an hour. The town sits at the foot of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain, and it is the starting point for almost every northern safari. Check in, have a swim or a nap, and get an early night.

Good to know

Food and drinks on arrival day are at your own cost, so you can eat whenever your flight lands. Both hotels have their own restaurant.

Elephants Under the Baobabs

After breakfast you drive about three hours south to Tarangire National Park. It is quieter than the Serengeti and known for its elephants: in the dry months the Tarangire River is the only water for miles, and elephant families come down to it all day.

Your guide drives the river road and the open grass around the swamps, looking for lions, giraffes, zebras, impala and the long-necked gerenuk. Lunch is a picnic at one of the park’s viewpoints over the river. In the late afternoon you leave by the northern gate and drive about two hours up the Rift Valley wall to Karatu.

Field note

Tarangire has more than 500 bird species. Ask your guide to find the yellow-collared lovebird, which lives only in this part of Tanzania.

Out Onto the Plains

The road to the Serengeti climbs over the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, then drops down through Maasai grazing land and out onto the short-grass plains. The drive takes about four hours and the game viewing starts before you reach the gate: gazelles, zebras and ostriches are common beside the road.

After a picnic lunch at Naabi Hill, the park’s main gate, you head for the Seronera Valley in the middle of the park. The river here keeps water all year, so lions, leopards and hyenas stay too. Your guide will check the sausage trees for leopards and the rocky kopjes for lions before you reach camp at dusk.

Honest note

The big migration herds move around the Serengeti through the year, and in the dry months they are usually further north. The Seronera Valley is on this route because its big cats do not leave.

A Day on the Crater Floor

You leave the Serengeti after breakfast and drive about three hours back to the crater rim, then down the 600-metre wall into the Ngorongoro Crater. The floor is about 20 km across and holds lions, buffalo, elephants, hyenas and a small number of black rhino, all in one place.

Lunch is a picnic by the hippo pool at Ngoitokitok spring. In the afternoon you drive past the soda lake, where flamingos often feed, and the fever-tree forest where old elephant bulls rest in the shade. You climb out before the gate closes and return to the same lodge in Karatu.

Good to know

The crater rim is about 2,300 m high and can be cold in the morning. Keep a fleece in the car, even in the dry season.

Day05
Karatu → Lake Manyara → Arusha

One Last Drive at Lake Manyara

It is only about 30 minutes down the escarpment to Lake Manyara National Park. The first part of the park is a green groundwater forest full of baboons and blue monkeys, then it opens out to grassland along the lake shore.

Look for elephants in the forest, hippos in the pool near the lake and, when the water level suits them, flamingos and pelicans on the lake. Manyara’s lions sometimes rest up in the acacia trees, so your guide will check the branches as well as the ground. After a picnic lunch you drive about three hours back to Arusha, where the tour ends.

When to Go

All four parks are good all year. From June to October the grass is short and animals stay close to the rivers, which makes them easier to find. From January to March the migration herds are on the plains south of Seronera, and April and May bring rain, green hills and the lowest prices.

Good questions

Before You Book

It gives you an afternoon and evening in the Seronera Valley, plus everything you see on the drives in and out, which is a real taste of the park. If you want a full day on the plains, ask about our 6-day version, which adds a second night in the Serengeti.

It depends on the month. From about January to March the herds are on the southern plains, and in April and May they pass through the central Serengeti. In the dry months they are usually further north. The Seronera area has resident lions, leopards and cheetahs all year, so there is always plenty to see.

Larger rooms and suites, very good food, and drinks with your meals from Day 2 to Day 4 (premium wines and spirits may be extra). The vehicle and guide are yours alone, so you set the pace, stop when you like and start early if you want to.

The longest are about four hours, from Karatu to the Serengeti and back towards the crater. Both run through wildlife country, so they count as game drives, and your guide will stop for animals, photos and breaks.
