Why this7-Day Luxury Tanzania Safari Builds Up

This trip saves the Serengeti for the middle of the week. You start gently with Tarangire and Lake Manyara, two smaller parks close to the highlands, and base yourself at the same Karatu lodge for both. By the time you reach the plains you know your guide, your vehicle and how a safari day works.

Then come two nights in the central Serengeti, among the best big-cat country in Africa, and the Ngorongoro Crater on the drive back. The last morning is an easy drive to Arusha, so there is no rush on your final day.

The Journey

✦

This is how the trip usually runs. Your guide will adjust each day around the weather, the wildlife and what you most want to see.

Welcome to Arusha
Day01
Kilimanjaro Airport → Arusha

First Night Below Mount Meru

Your guide meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and gives you a short briefing on the week. Then it is about an hour’s drive west to Arusha, the town at the foot of Mount Meru where most northern safaris begin.

You spend the night at a large hotel among the coffee fields or a small boutique house with only a few rooms. Either way, the evening is yours to rest.

Good to know

Food and drinks tonight are at your own cost. From tomorrow, meals and most drinks are included.

Tarangire's Giants

After breakfast you drive about three hours south to Tarangire National Park. The park has one of the largest elephant populations in East Africa, and in the dry season the herds walk down to the Tarangire River in their hundreds, raising red dust between the baobabs.

Lions, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest share the river valley with them. You have a picnic lunch in the park, then drive two hours up to Karatu, where your lodge looks out over the green highland farms.

Day03
Karatu → Lake Manyara National Park → Karatu

A Day by the Lake

Today is a full day in Lake Manyara National Park, just half an hour down the escarpment from your lodge. It is a small park, but it packs in a lot: a tall groundwater forest at the gate full of baboons and blue monkeys, open floodplains with buffalo and giraffe, and a wide soda lake at the foot of the Rift Valley wall.

Out on the lake there are hippos, pelicans, storks and, in some months, great numbers of flamingos. Manyara is also known for lions that climb trees, though they are hard to find. You have lunch in the park and are back at the lodge in time to enjoy it.

Field note

Over 400 bird species have been recorded at Manyara. Even if you have never cared about birds, the fish eagles, hornbills and crowned cranes here are worth a look.

The Road to the Serengeti

After breakfast you climb through the forest along the Ngorongoro Crater rim and drop down the far side into dry Maasai country. Beyond Naabi Hill gate the Serengeti’s short-grass plains stretch to the horizon.

The drive to the central Serengeti takes about four hours, with game viewing the whole way: gazelles, hartebeest, ostriches and, if you are lucky, a cheetah scanning the grass from a termite mound. You arrive at your tented camp in the afternoon, with time for a first drive near Seronera.

Day05
Central Serengeti

Lions, Leopards & Kopjes

A full day to explore, with no bags to pack. The central Serengeti around the Seronera Valley has water all year, which means it has lions, leopards and cheetahs all year too. Your guide will check the river trees for leopards and the granite kopjes where the prides like to rest.

If the migration herds are passing through, you may spend part of the day among thousands of wildebeest and zebra. If not, the resident game keeps the day busy. Lunch can be a picnic out on the plains or back at camp.

Honest note

We can’t promise the Great Migration on any date. The herds follow the rain, and in some months they are far from the central Serengeti. Ask us and we’ll tell you where they usually are for your dates.

Day06
Central Serengeti → Ngorongoro Crater → Karatu

The Crater on the Way Home

You leave camp after breakfast and drive about three hours back to the crater highlands. At the rim you descend into the Ngorongoro Crater, a 600-metre-deep volcanic bowl with its own grassland, swamps, forest and a shallow soda lake.

Few places in Africa hold so many animals in so small a space. Look for lion, buffalo, hyena and elephant, flamingos on Lake Magadi and the crater’s small population of black rhino. After a picnic lunch at the hippo pool you climb out and return to the lodge you stayed at earlier in the week.

Day07
Karatu → Arusha

Back to Arusha

A slow breakfast, then you leave the highlands behind. The road winds down the escarpment past Lake Manyara and through Mto wa Mbu, a busy market town at the foot of the Rift Valley wall, then crosses the dry Maasai plains to Arusha.

The drive takes about three hours, and the tour ends in Arusha around midday. That leaves the afternoon free for an onward flight, a night near the airport or a hop to Zanzibar.

Good to know

Only breakfast is included today. If you’re flying home tonight, tell us your flight time and we’ll plan the transfer around it.

When to Go

July to September is peak dry season: thin grass, animals close to water and the busiest parks. January to March is green and warm, and April and May bring the long rains, few vehicles and the best prices. The Serengeti’s resident cats are there whichever month you choose.

Good questions

Before You Book

Karatu sits between Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the crater and the Serengeti road, so it is the easiest base for this route. Staying three nights at one lodge means less packing, and the staff will know you by the time you come back from the Serengeti.

Not usually. The park is small, but the forest, the floodplain and the lakeshore each feel different, and a full day lets you go slowly and wait for things. If you’d rather, we can split the day with a relaxed afternoon at the lodge.

Your private vehicle and guide, all park and crater fees, the lodges shown, all meals from Day 2 and most drinks at the lodges on safari days. Premium wines and spirits may be charged. Day 1 dinner and anything after breakfast on Day 7 are at your own cost.

Yes. You reach Arusha around midday on Day 7, which leaves time for an afternoon flight to Zanzibar, about 1 hr 20 min. Tell us how many beach nights you’d like and we’ll add them to your quote.
