Why they matter

Islands ofancient forest.

The Eastern Arc mountains are among the oldest on the continent. Their forests have stayed wet for millions of years while the land around them dried out, so plants and animals evolved here that live nowhere else, from the Udzungwa red colobus to the African violet. Walking here is quiet and green, with birdsong instead of engines.

Mountain Essentials

Getting there
Usambara: about five hours by road from Arusha or Dar es Salaam. Udzungwa: about five hours from Dar es Salaam, or on the way to Ruaha. Uluguru: right above Morogoro.
Fitness
Walks range from gentle village paths to steep forest climbs. We match the route to you.
When to go
June to October is driest. The forests are wet and green all year, so bring a rain jacket and shoes with grip.
Where you sleep
Simple guesthouses and lodges near the trailheads. These are walking trips, not luxury stays.
With a safari
Udzungwa combines well with Ruaha and Nyerere in the south; the Usambaras with the coast and the north.
