The Chagga

Farmers ofthe mountain.

The Chagga are one of Tanzania’s largest peoples. For centuries they have farmed the fertile lower slopes of Kilimanjaro in home gardens where bananas, coffee, beans and vegetables grow together, watered by channels cut from the mountain streams. On a village visit you pick, roast and grind coffee by hand, taste mbege, the local banana beer, and hear how families have lived on the mountain for generations.

The villages are the gentlest way to spend a rest day in Moshi, and a good first taste of the mountain before you set off.

Know before you go

Village Essentials

Getting there
Materuni is about 30 minutes and Marangu about 45 minutes by road from Moshi. Both are an hour or so from Kilimanjaro Airport.
When to go
All year. Paths are muddy in the long rains (March to May) and the short rains (November), but the waterfalls are at their fullest.
What to wear
Good walking shoes and a light rain jacket. It is cooler on the slopes than in Moshi.
With your climb
We often add a village day before a climb to help you adjust to altitude, or after it as an easy last day.
Respect
You are a guest on family farms. Ask before taking photographs of people and homes.
— Your days on the slopes

Coffee, Waterfalls, Kibo.

Add a day in the Chagga villages to your Kilimanjaro climb or safari. We arrange the village, the guide and the family lunch.
