The CraterHighlands

Volcanic craters, misty forest and open grassland where Maasai herders still graze their cattle beside the wildlife. Ngorongoro Highlands trekking shows you far more than the famous crater floor. The area is run by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority.

Ngorongoro Highlands Trekking: More Than One Crater

Most visitors see the crater floor and leave. The highlands around it hold quieter craters, forest walks and the Maasai villages that make this place unique.

The Maasai

People and wildlife,one landscape.

Ngorongoro is not a national park. It is a conservation area where Maasai families have the right to live, graze their cattle and keep their way of life. A visit to a working boma, arranged through the village and led by your guide, shows how a semi-nomadic family lives alongside lions, buffalo and elephants. It is a meeting, not a performance.

Things to do

Beyond the Crater Floor

The crater is the headline. These are the experiences that turn a single game drive into two or three memorable days in the highlands.

Maasai boma visit

Time with a Maasai family in their homestead: cattle, beadwork, the layout of the boma and how life works here. Arranged directly with the village.

Olmoti and the highland plains 04

Olmoti and the highland plains

A gentle walk from the Maasai villages to Olmoti crater and the Munge waterfall, through grazing land with wide views over the highlands.

Ndutu in the calving season

From December to March the wildebeest calve on the short-grass plains at Ndutu, in the west of the conservation area, with the predators close behind.

Highland Essentials

Park fees
Conservation fees are charged per person per day, with a separate fee for each vehicle that goes down into the crater. We include them in your trip price.
Crater time
Time on the crater floor is limited by the authority, so we start early to make the most of it.
Weather
The rim is at about 2,300 m: mornings and evenings are cold all year. Bring a warm layer. The long rains fall from March to May.
Walking
Walks in Empakaai and Olmoti are always with an armed ranger and need to be booked in advance.
Etiquette
Ask before you photograph anyone. In the villages your guide will explain what is welcome and what is not.
